The News - The Archives

As Las Vegas readies for the influx of speed-hungry racing enthusiasts coming to town for NASCAR, the Fremont Street Experience is gearing up with a party weekend custom made for the race fan audience.  The downtown hotspot has an entire weekend of free entertainment lined up, with two headline concerts timed for Saturday night, March 10.  For you country music fans, Darryl Worley will play on the 3rd Street stage, and if rock and roll better fits your style, then check out Deep South , on the 1st Street stage.  If you want to see both acts, no problem. The stages are only couple of blocks from each other, and both are housed nicely under the giant, four-block long Viva Vision screen.

Country hit-maker Darryl Worley has had songs on the country charts since 2000 and is currently promoting his new album, “Here and Now” that includes the hit song, “I Just Came Back (From A War).”

The list of band members from Deep South reads like a southern rock hall of fame roster.  The band includes Jimmy Hall from Wet Willie, Artimus Pyle from Lynard Skynyrd, Robert Nix from Atlanta Rhythm Section, Chris Hicks from the Marshall Tucker Band, and Hal McCormack from Black Oak Arkansas.  Collectively, the members of Deep South have sold more than 30 million records.

Since race fans tend to like things that are very loud and go very fast in dangerous situations, the Fremont Street Experience has included Bela Tabak’s Riders of the Thunderdome in the weekend party.  Bela and his motorcycle daredevil team attain speeds in excess of 40 mph while racing inside a 14-foot–3-inch orb, appropriately named The Globe of Death, which is fashioned from four tons of steel. The Riders of the Thunderdome will perform in the Globe of Death near the corner of Main and Fremont Streets at 7:15pm and 9:15pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

Cingular will also be on Fremont Street, with its interactive tire changing challenge.  The booth simulates the pit stop experience, allowing race fans the opportunity to change a tire on the Cingular race car while being timed.

The RaceJam event March 9-11 and the headline concerts on March 10 are free and open to the public.  The 1st Street stage is located next to Binion’s casino at the intersection of 1st and Fremont Streets. The 3rd Street stage is located between the Four Queens and Fitzgeralds casinos at the intersection of 3rd and Fremont streets.  Ample parking is available at the Fremont Street Experience parking garage located on the corner of Carson and 4th Streets or at any of the casinos lining historic Fremont Street.
